Our Mission
Our mission is to remove barriers to education by providing free and affordable pathways to a GED, workforce skills, and lifelong learning.
Our Vision
We envision a Milwaukee where every adult has access to education, testing, and the support they need to build a stable future for themselves and their families.
Our Story
Joyce’s Legacy Learning Center was created in honor of Joyce Davis, a woman who believed deeply in second chances, family, and the power of learning.
After Joyce passed away in 2015, her granddaughter Mercedez Butts created Joyce’s House as a recovery home for women rebuilding their lives. From 2019 to 2023, Joyce’s House provided safe housing and stability for more than 200 women.
In 2021, GED preparation was introduced inside the recovery home after education was identified as one of the biggest barriers to long term stability. The impact was immediate. Education gave residents confidence, opportunity, and a future to work toward.
In 2023, Joyce’s House Education Center evolved into Joyce’s Legacy Learning Center, expanding services beyond recovery into a full adult education and testing hub serving the Milwaukee community.
Today, Joyce’s Legacy Learning Center serves thousands of learners each year through GED preparation, testing, workforce development, and community based education.
Our Journey
2019
It Was All A Dream
In 2019, Joyce's House was born from a profound dream to create a haven for women recovering from addiction. This sacred space was designed as a tribute to Joyce, the founder's grandmother, who had triumphed over her addiction and remained sober for the last 14 years of her life. Joyce's courageous journey became the inspiration behind this safe and nurturing place for women.
2019 to 2023
A Guiding Light for Over 228 Women
In 2019, a remarkable vision came to life in the form of Joyce's House. This sacred haven was established as a sanctuary for women on the path to recovery from addiction, paying tribute to the indomitable spirit of Joyce, who was the grandmother of Mercedez and is her consistent inspiration.
Joyce, a beacon of strength and resilience, conquered her own addiction and remained sober for the final fourteen years of her life. Joyce fought her last battle on November 22nd, 2015. She was 58 years old.
